This distinctive Arabica coffee, sourced exclusively from Finca Monte Azul, reflects the expertise of one of Mexico’s most highly regarded growers. Cultivated in the fertile, high-altitude lands of Huatusco, Veracruz, this small lot combines Catimor, Typica, and Bourbon varietals, carefully nurtured and hand-harvested at peak ripeness.

The beans undergo a traditional washed process with a 72-hour fermentation, followed by slow sun-drying, which preserves their depth of flavour. The result is a coffee with a velvety body, bright yet balanced character, and a refined sweetness — a true expression of Veracruz’s coffee heritage.

Huatusco, Veracruz – The Heart of Mexican Coffee

Veracruz holds a special place in coffee history — it was the very first region in mainland America to cultivate coffee, beginning in the late 1700s when the first plants arrived at the port of Veracruz and flourished near Córdoba.

Once the largest producer in the country, Veracruz now contributes around a quarter of Mexico’s total harvest, yet continues to be synonymous with quality. Huatusco, located high in the central highlands, has become one of the region’s best-kept secrets in specialty coffee.

With elevations from 1,200 to 1,800 metres, Huatusco’s microclimate of abundant rainfall, cool mountain nights, and fertile volcanic soils creates ideal conditions for slow-maturing Arabica beans. Here, family-run farms — many of them passed down for generations — cultivate traditional varietals using time-honoured methods. Extended fermentation in the washed process, while challenging in the humid climate, produces exceptional complexity in the cup.

Huatusco coffees are known for their lively acidity, balanced mouthfeel, and nuanced flavours that often highlight notes of chocolate, nuts, citrus, and stone fruits. Though less widely recognised than Chiapas or Oaxaca, Huatusco consistently produces standout lots that embody the depth and diversity of Mexican coffee.
